Ebru--Our adventure on the afternoon of Day 2.

We were welcomed into Hikmet Barutcugil's home and studio.  His apprentices worked with him to lay out the trays, paints and tools.
The paints are suspended in a gelatin-like solution that must be strained into the trays.

Mr. Barutcugil finishes up the solution to ready it for the paints.

Paints and brushes.

Shapes are made by adding drops of paint into the solutin and moving them with brushes, combs, and other tools.

The first finished example.

More dots and swirls for a very different effect.

A comb can be moved through the paints to create symmetrical patterns such as the pattern below.

This afternoon, we learned to make ebru--a special form of paper marbling. This link will show you images of Hikmet Barutcugil, our teacher, and some of his work.

Here is some background information on Mr. Barutcugil and an interview with him about ebru.
