Day 3--A visit to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul

The entrance to the  Blue Mosque.

The portico in the courtyard.  We all lined up to take off our shoes to enter the mosque.  A section was cordoned off just for those who were praying.  A Visit to the Blue Mosque--YouTube Video!
The main dome with intricate mosaics and painting.
One of the names of Allah from the Koran in Arabic calligraphic script.

Only the faithful--no tourists--can enter this carpeted section.

A series of arched window ways and small domes support the large central dome.

I did not know that Turkish mosques would have beautiful stained glass windows.

Women could only sit behind the screens during services, however they could pray anywhere in the mosque between services.

This wasn't part of the original tour, but we had a few "extra" minutes, so we visited the old abandoned cistern under the city.
Built by the Emperor Justinian, the same emperor who built the beautiful Hagia Sofia, these deep wells under the city had been built upon and forgotten for many centuries.

These fish are raised in the cistern and then caught by the local restaurant owners to serve their guests!
