Afternoon on Day 2!

Our ferry from Europe to Asia!

Istanbul is divided by waterways into 3 sections: Old Istanbul and New Istanbul in Europe and a large residential area in Asia.  We traveled from Sultanhamen in old Istanbul to the Asia side.

Dolmabahce Palace--the last (and most modern) palace built by the sultans in the 1800's.

Precise stonework.

The Byzantines lived in old Istanbul and built this fortress for protection from the invading hordes from Asia.

This wall still rings much of old Istanbul.

The boat moved leisurely through the Bosphorus. On board there was tea (cay), coffee (kahve) and snacks--and shade!

There is no town planning in Istanbul so buildings are torn down, left in a decrepit state, and built around or on top of each other.

On the shore are still some old Ottoman mansins.

Old Istandul as viewed from the Asian shore. Zoom in on this map at point A to see the three waterways dividing Istanbul.

  2. That palace built by the sultans in the 1800's looks like it is shampooed every day, because it is so white for being old Because most of the time white turns yellow with age.
